Raja Ampat & Baliem Valley

14 days/ 13 nights   from/to Denpasar, Bali

Great package to one of the most exotic destinations on earth – New Guinea! On this varied journey you will get to know the highlands of Papua, the famous Baliem Valley, as well as the heavenly Raja Ampat.
The Baliem Valley with its provincial capital Wamena is the home of the Dani and Lani and can still only be reached by plane. A breathtaking and absolutely original experience for every visitor! We explore the valley in a selection of day trips: Hiking in untouched nature, a mummy, the highest lake of Indonesia, and of course a traditional pig festival are on the program. We will stay at the Baliem Valley Resort. The resort is located at 1900 meters above sea level, in the middle of the mighty Jayawijaya Mountains and covers a 1600 hectare natural paradise of its own. Guests admire breathtaking mountain panoramas and overwhelming natural beauty.
From Baliem Valley we travel directly to one of Indonesia’s new top destinations. Dream beaches, boat trips, snorkeling, birds of paradise: Raja Ampat is probably one of the most beautiful destinations in Asia and is still rarely visited. Untouched nature and lonely beaches are guaranteed. We stay at Raja Ampat Dive Lodge, one of the most beautiful resorts in the area. Raja Ampat is a diving paradise, but our program is aimed at all non-divers who want to get to know the beauty of this region. By private boat we go to the most worth seeing destinations of the region. There is enough time for great snorkeling trips, hikes, and birds of paradise.

Full day in Bali. Around midnight, we pick you up in the hotel and transfer you to the airport for the Garuda Indonesia flight to Jayapura, Papua. Departure time is around 01:50am.

Day 3

Denpasar – Jayapura – Wamena & Visit of Wamena market
Arrival in Jayapura around 08.40am. After short transit, onward flight to Wamena in the highlands of Papua (flight time 30 minutes). Lunch and visit of the local market in Wamena. Especially Dani women go to the market place every morning to sell fruit and vegetables. But the market is also the main trading place for the sought-after wild boars. Transfer to The Baliem Valley Resort, Dinner at the Resort.

Day 4

Trekking south Baliem Gorge
In the morning we drive to the southern Baliem-Valley. The road ends in a village called Sogogmo, about 3 km before Kurima. Our walking tour along the powerful Baliem-River begins here. First of all a suspension bridge has to be crossed. After that the tour goes on through romantic Dani settlements with terraced fields and wild groves of sugar-cane. All the time we have a wonderful view over the river and the narrow valley. In the early afternoon we reach the church of Seinma where we have lunch surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Before we reach Kurima a suspension bridge has to be crossed again. And before we reach our bus some small side valleys have to be passed. Today one will find a lot of unique photo motives. In the late afternoon we reach the Resort.

Day 5

Salt spring, Kurulu mummy, traditional Dani hamlet
In the morning, one-hour trip to Jiwikia, in the middle of the Baliem Valley. Start of a one-hour uphill hike (approx. 1,000 feet altitude difference) through stunning mountain rainforest to the traditional salt spring of the Dani tribe. Local women dressed in traditional tribal clothes will accompany us and show us their ancestral salt production techniques. After the walk down we will take a picnic lunch at the foot of the mountain. We will then walk to the nearby Kurulu village where you can admire the ancient mummy of the famous Dugum clan. Afterwards, the women show us how they process the brine they extracted from the spring. We will see more quaint and picturesque Dani homesteads. Wherever we go, friendly Papuans offers their arts and craft, weapons, and all kinds of curiosities for sale. Return to the resort in the afternoon

Day 6

Journey to the Habema Lake
This tour should start early in the morning. Depending on the weather (rain!) the drive through the tall rainforests can be problematic! A 3-hour drive (about 55 miles) from the resort to the lake at about 10,500 feet altitude. We will pass all the vegetation zones of Equatorial New Guinea. The often savannah-like landscape of the wide bottom of the Baliem Valley gives way to gigantic mountain cloud forests and rainforests with truly monstrous tree ferns and screw pines. The giant trees are overgrown with moss, lichen and climbing plants – a wonderfully unique flora. Lake Habbema is located in the middle of a large upland moor, surrounded by magical meadows full of dwarf cypresses, little tree ferns, rhododendron and many different types of orchid. If the weather is nice you will have spectacular views of the peak of nearby Mount Trikora (15,000 feet). Picnic lunch by the lake surrounded by the magnificent upland moor landscape. Excursions to the surrounding area are possible depending on the weather. If the sun does shine you can even bathe in the lake (sandy beach). We drive back to the resort in the afternoon.

Day 7

Traditional pig festival
Traditional one-day pig festival in a traditional Dani village, either in the resort grounds or in the Jiwika region. Many adorned people from the Dani tribe in traditional clothing will take part in the festival. Such food celebrations with hot stones and earth pits are probably the most interesting part of a trip to New Guinea. If you like taking photos and videos you will certainly get your money’s worth today! It is difficult to describe what’s so unique about these food celebrations; you will have to see and experience it for yourself. Lunch will be a picnic in the village. If you like you can taste the food from the traditional earth pit afterwards. The freshly cooked pork and sweet potatoes are delicious! Back to the Resort in the late afternoon.

Day 8

Wamena – Jayapura – Sorong
In the morning transfer from the resort to Wamena, flight to Jayapura. Upon arrival, onward flight to Sorong with GA699 at 11:20. Arrival in Sorong at 14:15 and transfer to Hotel SwissBel. In the afternoon drive to the market place, followed by dinner in a cookery on the traditional fish market.

Day 9

Sorong – Raja Ampat
After breakfast short transfer to the port, for the trip by speedboat to Raja Ampat Dive Lodge (journey time about 1 hour). In the lodge we are welcomed with a cocktail and lunch. The rest of the day is free. The small island allows for a nice walk, and at the lodge’s own pier you can already snorkel very nicely. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 10

Kabui Bay + Bird of Paradise
The day starts very early because we want to observe birds of paradise at the very beginning. These animals are especially active in the early morning hours. We start at 05:00 o’clock with a short drive to the village Sawingray. From here it is a short walk to the birds in the forest. Around 08:00 o’clock we want to be back in the lodge and have breakfast in peace. After breakfast we take the speedboat in the direction of Kabui. Kabui is a big bay with many coral islands of different size. The trip in our private boat is wonderful, and at a suitable place we stop for snorkeling. A snorkeling guide accompanies us and shows us the best spots. At low tide we can make a detour to Pasir Timbul, another coral spot. A day with enough time for swimming and snorkeling in this untouched paradise. Lunch is served on the way, dinner at the lodge.

Day 11

Piaynemo Island
The island of Piaynemo (or Penemu) is one of the spots that every Raja Ampat visitor should have seen. Piaynemo resembles the famous Wayag island group, but is a bit smaller and more remote. After breakfast we start by speedboat again. We start the trip with a nice snorkel spot. Then we drive to the island and walk up to the view point. From here you have a great view over the fantastic island landscape. On the way back we visit the village Arborek and get to know the typical life of the local people. Lunch is served on the way, dinner at the lodge.

Day 12

Free day at the lodge
It takes a long time to get to Raja Ampat, so we don’t want to leave right away. The whole day at the lodge at your disposal. Whether you go for a walk on the island, snorkel at our own pier, or spend the day on the sun lounger is up to you. Full board in the lodge.
