The Baliem Valley Resort

Trekking South Baliem

4 days/ 4 nights   in combination with a package

This program includes nights in a tent. Tents are provided by us, but each participant must bring their own sleeping bag and sleeping mat. This add-on should be booked in combination with one of our special packages.

With this trekking add-on we drive into the Kurima area until the road ends. From there our trekking starts far away from the roads, through untouched landscape, past many villages and fields of the Dani. You sleep in tents or simple inns, cook at the campfire, and experience the present life of the remote living Dani. A beautiful 3-night-adventure, feasible for anyone who can walk uphill.

Day 1

Drive to Sogokmo, start trekking to Kelise
In the morning, drive to the southern Baliem Valley past Wamena. By the village of Sogogmo, not quite 2 miles outside Kurima, the road ends. This is where our hike along the huge Baliem river starts. You will be accompanied by your guide, a cook, and additional porters. The trek will be around 4 hours through the Kurima district. We pass through romantic Dani settlements with their terraced fields and wild sugar cane groves. Throughout the hike we enjoy magnificent views of the river and the narrow valley. Overnight at local guesthouse or tent in Kelise.

Day 2

Kelise – Ibiroma – Syokosimo
After breakfast we continue our trekking. First, we have to go down a steep slope, down to the Baliem River. Today’s trail is a little more challenging. We cross the Baliem River at the suspension bridge of Lelipso. For this crossing you should feel comfortable with heights, as the bridge is rather wobbly. Afterwards, we plan lunch at a small waterfall, where we can also freshen up a little. After lunch, the path gets smaller and a bit tricky and we have to cross another, smaller river. After a total walking time of 4-5 hours we should have reached our today’s destination – Syokosimo village. Overnight at local guest house or tent.

Day 3

Syokosimo – Hitugi
First we have to climb a steep mountain. Once at the top, a magnificent view over the Baliem River awaits us. We can take our time and enjoy the view. It is not far to Hitugi and on the way we pass another typical village and a small market place. Overnight at local guest house or tent in Hitugi.

Day 4

Hitugi – Seinma – Sogokmo – Resort
From Hitugi we follow the ridge for a while until we reach the nice village of Seinma. From here the path goes through a nice mountain forest and can be muddy in places. We slowly descend and soon the first Dani fields appear, mainly sweet potato is planted here but also corn, manioc, and exotic plants like ginger. We cross the suspension bridge of Sogokmo and after a short climb we are back at the road where our car awaits us. Drive back to the Resort, overnight and dinner in the Resort.
